The notification area is not always enabled in Linux and therefore the UPDD Daemon icon is not seen.
For any given Linux distribution you should be able to enable the notification area as in the RHEL 6 (and CentOS 6) example although it will vary depending on the distribution is use. It would appear that not all distributions cater for a system tray / notification area, such as SLES 12.
By default on RHEL6 two panels are configured.
It is left to an end user to decide whether to show this and if so where.

The notification panel can be added to either as follows:
Right click on the desired panel and choose Add to Panel
From the dialog show select Notification Area -> Add -> Close
Then reboot the system.
The notification area can then be seen.
