UPDD services not running after install

Dave Bhattacharjee
Mac OS

UPDD driver and utility functionality relies on various processes being active.

If any of the main processes as documented in the above link are not running, then of course the associated functionality will not work.

UPDD (driver), UPDD Daemon and UPDD Commander processes run as a launch agent such that, should it fail for any reason, it will start automatically.

In normal operation both these processes are related to a menu bar icon  (which can be disabled if required) and if they are expected to be shown but are missing it does imply that the process is not running. We have investigated a number of reports that the icons are missing, and we have seen that the process has become disabled.

To the best of our knowledge, these processes can only become disabled at a user's manual request or if another third party application or the system disables it.

If this occurs on your system, we suggest you either uninstall / reinstall the software or alternatively run the following command in a terminal window, as per this example:

To start the driver: (you can also start updddaemon and upddcommander)

sudo launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.touch-base.updd.plist

(To stop the driver: sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.touch-base.updd.plist)

This should re-enable the launchd job, start the process and set it to start automatically.

There is a GUI application available called LaunchControl to view system and user services:
